We ask the tough questions

What's the biggest thing you've learnt this year?

If I stick to the goals I have set myself and more importantly, know precisely the outcomes I want from those goals, I will achieve them. Just setting the goal = epic fail. Guaranteed.

What's the best bit of feedback you've ever had?

A wriggly, painful, gut-wrenching piece of one sided feedback about how I had held a meeting back in my corporate days that I didn't know how to respond or act upon. It made me look for ways to take the feedback and learn from it: to get a better understanding of others people's points of view and what expectations they might have. The book I picked up was one on NLP and this started my journey into becoming a life coach. Oh the nostalgia!

What’s your number one stress relief tactic (keep it clean!)?

Singing really badly and loudly. It helps me get over myself very quickly, reset my brain and go into important meetings raring to go. Stress gets left on a high note outside. Hot tip for anyone else who wants to adopt this tactic: if self-conscious, best not to do it in a busy lift on the way to a meeting.

What’s the one resource you’d never be without?

My brain. It's taken me a while to realise that all I need is actually in there ... somewhere.

What or who has the most grounding influence on you?

NLP. It helps me become aware of surroundings and people very quickly.

What’s the most enjoyable element of your work? And the least enjoyable?

Most enjoyable: Working with people who want to take massive action and do something to transform themselves.

Least enjoyable: Explaining to some people that coaching is not about giving them a solution and fixing things for them.

What’s the best thing about being a soloist? And the worst thing?

Best: The opportunity to meet and speak with so many people that would have been outside my corporate bubble.

Worst: Having to be really ruthless with the amount of time I can allocate to people and tasks - including coaching sessions.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?

Do a simple business plan so you know for yourself what is required. Then once you have got over the shock of how much 'work' there is, you will also know that there are plenty of people and resources available to help get it done.

What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?

Get rid of all your limiting beliefs about "it will never happen", "I'll get round to it someday" and my personal favourite "what if no one likes what I am doing with this business" NOW. See a coach (ahem), read a book, get a support group. Whatever it takes.

How did your school report describe you (in three words)?

Enthusiastic, curious, adaptable.

And now comes the plug!

What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?

I help people find solutions to problems that are keeping them from shining brightly through face-to-face and phone coaching sessions. This enables them to have a lightbulb moment, leave the past behind, move forward and realise goals now rather than "some day".
